Pacific Region's Top Challenges

The Pacific region's top challenges closely mirror those of North America. And like their peers in North America, executives in the Pacific Region paint a rather uniform picture of the HR landscape, sharing the same top three topics in common: managing talent, improving leadership development, and managing demographics. Diverging somewhat from North America, however, they cited managing change and cultural transformation as an additional challenge.

Several executives cited the tight labour market in Australia as an ongoing concern with unemployment rate at 5.8 per cent, close to the projected peak of 6.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2010. Today, the shortage of skilled workers is creating wage pressure. Tomorrow, demographics, globalisation, and emigration could create real labour shortages and gaps. Executives strongly agreed that the inability to attract talented employees could be the potentially biggest limitation on Australia's economic growth.

Companies' Current Capabilities in Managing Diversity

In most focus countries, executives rated their companies' current capabilities in managing diversity as low or average.

Managing diversity is a topic of high future importance in only a few focus countries such as Japan, Italy and Spain, where it has been strongly pushed by the government. Respondents from all focus countries, except for Germany, however, estimated that their companies' current capabilities to manage this HR challenge were low or average.
